

What is mold?
Mold is an umbrella term for a diverse number of fungal species. They are microbes that cause the biodegration of natural elements. In other words, they spoil foods or damage property, for example the wall and furniture in your house.
The following mold types often cause allergic symptoms in sensitized patients:
- Alternaria alternata: Grows on carpets, clothing, windows, walls, etc.
- Aspergillus fumigatus and Penicilum chrysogenum: Grows in plant pots, leaf piles, compost, rotten vegetables and other spoiled foods
- Cladosporium herbarum: Grows in wet rooms such as bathrooms and basements

Where mold likes to hide
Where does mold growth usually hide? There are some obvious and less obvious places where you should check for unwanted growth of fungi that can cause allergic symptoms:
- On and under the doormat
- Beneath wallpaper and drywall
- Inside toothbrush holders
- Under the sink, in the shower or bathtub
- On windows and windowsills
- On or underneath mattresses
- Inside plant pots
- Around boilers and water heaters
- Inside the pantry or refrigerator
- On curtains, carpets, and upholstery

Mold allergy symptoms
Exposure to mold spores can cause the following allergic symptoms:
- Sneezing
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Cough and postnasal drip
- Itchy eyes, nose, and throat
- Red and watery eyes
- Dry, scaly skin
Furthermore, exposure to mold spores can also trigger the symptoms of allergic asthma:
- Coughing
- Wheezing
- Shortness of breath
- Chest tightness
